With determination, a positive attitude and the right support, Woodcroft local Mason, has achieved significant employment milestones over the past year, highlighting the positive impact of inclusive employment.

Mason, who is autistic and lives with an intellectual disability, recently celebrated a 12-week employment outcome in his role as a Gardener with Diverse Learning. Since starting in the position, he has maintained steady employment, exceeded expectations and received positive feedback from his employer.

Those who work alongside him describe Mason as reliable, hardworking and committed to his role. His contribution has made him a valued member of the team.

Mason’s success has continued beyond his gardening position. He has also secured casual work with Event Personnel, assisting with concert and event operations across Adelaide. His duties include event set-up, pack-down and cleaning, giving him the chance to build new skills, broaden his experience and work in different environments.

Although the hours vary depending on event schedules, the role reflects Mason’s growing confidence and willingness to take on new opportunities.

Friends and supporters describe Mason as friendly, sociable and always willing to lend a hand. His positive attitude has helped him build strong relationships and contribute meaningfully to the workplace.

Outside of work, Mason enjoys basketball, gaming and movies — activities that support recreation, social connection and wellbeing.

Mason’s journey also shows the important role tailored support can play in helping people achieve their goals. With a strong support network around him, he has been able to build confidence, develop workplace skills, maintain employment and grow his independence.

Southern Community Options has been proud to support Mason throughout his employment journey. As an Inclusive Employment Australia provider, the organisation supports young autistic people to prepare for work, find suitable employment and maintain long-term roles.

This includes understanding each person’s strengths, interests and goals, while working with employers to encourage inclusive recruitment, workplace adjustments and sustainable employment outcomes.

Matthew Edwards, Employment Mentor and Site Coordinator at Southern Community Options, said Mason’s story shows what’s possible when people are supported to pursue meaningful employment.

“Employers who recognise individual strengths create workplaces that are more inclusive, diverse and successful,” he said.

Mason’s achievements are also a reminder of the value people with disability bring to the workforce, including commitment, unique perspectives and strong contributions to workplace culture.

As he continues to build his skills and experience, Mason’s story demonstrates how opportunity, support and inclusive employment can help people thrive.

For this Woodcroft local, the future looks bright.
