Why Autism-Specific Employment Support Makes a Difference

Finding the right job is only part of the employment journey. Feeling understood, supported and confident at work is what helps people build lasting careers.

That's why the Australian Government introduced the Autism-Specific Program within Inclusive Employment Australia—recognising that autistic job seekers can benefit from employment support designed specifically around their strengths, communication styles and career aspirations.

Understanding strengths before focusing on jobs

At Southern Community Options, we believe employment starts with understanding the individual.

Rather than simply matching someone to the next available vacancy, we take time to discover:

  • What inspires and engages them

  • Their interests and passions

  • Workplace preferences

  • Communication styles

  • Learning strengths

  • Long-term career goals

This strengths-based approach helps participants build confidence while identifying employment opportunities where they can succeed.

Practical support every step of the way

Our Employment Mentors provide tailored support throughout the entire employment journey.

Support may include:

  • Building resumes and applications

  • Practising interviews

  • Developing workplace communication skills

  • Learning travel and transport skills

  • Building confidence through work experience

  • Preparing for the first day of work

  • Providing ongoing workplace mentoring

We also work closely with employers to create positive workplace experiences by offering advice on recruitment, workplace adjustments and supporting neurodiverse employees.

Employment that lasts

Success isn't measured by getting someone into a job for a few weeks.

At Southern Community Options, success means supporting participants find employment where they can continue learning, growing and building independence over time.

By supporting both participants and employers, we're creating stronger employment outcomes and more inclusive workplaces.
